TVB Anniversary Feature: Jessica Hsuan
Posted Thursday, November 4, 2010 // 12:35 AM
Believe it or not, Jessica Hester Hsuan (宣萱) has been working for TVB for almost 20 years now.
Discovered by TVB in 1991, the actress rose to fame with her role as Samantha Ching in File of Justice IV (1995). Since then, she has become one of the "fa dans" (TVB A-list actress) in TVB. More of her well-known roles include Michelle in Cold Blood Warm Heart (1996), Siu Fong Fong in Old Time Buddy (1997), Ling Choi Fung in Square Pegs (2002), Ko Hei Man in Just Love (2005), and Carmen in Dicey Business (2006). She can play different kinds of role: gambler, mad wife, tough woman, etc. She has 3 series out this year: A Pillowcase of Mystery II, Sisters of Pearl, and anniversary series Gun Metal Grey. In Gun Metal Grey, she collaborates with Michael Miu again as his love interest. Another tough woman role she plays, should be easy.
Will she win this year's TV Queen (TVB anniversary awards' Best Actress)? Well, she was 1999's TV Queen, winning the award with series Detective Investigation Files IV [first pic]. No need to win more awards to prove her popularity or secure her place as TVB's "fa dan," her work over these years proved it all already.
Celebrity “Twins”: Jessica Hsuan, Michelle Ye, and Faye Wong
Posted Tuesday, September 7, 2010 // 11:33 PM
Celebrities are most often praised not only for their talents and personalities but also for their unique and extraordinary looks. However if you take a closer look you will realize that, just like us, many of them do look like each other or at least share some very similar features.
From this week onwards, we will explore the similarities between celebrities. Each article will focus on a pair of celebrities. This week, we will focus on Jessica Hsuan, Michelle Ye, and Faye Wong.
Jessica Hsuan and Michelle Ye
Forty-year-old actress, Jessica Hsuan, who has starred in many popular TVB shows, including Sisters of Pearl <掌上明珠> and A Pillow Case of Mystery II <施公奇案>, bears an uncunning reseblance to thirty-year-old actress Michelle Ye, who is currently working on the much anticipated movie Bruce Lee, My Brother with Aarif Lee and Jennifer Tse.
Both Jessica and Michelle have identical big round eyes and similar noses. They both have the same skin color and they even have similar face bone structure. Due to her younger age, Michelle’s face looks brighter and more fresh, while Michelle’s lips are fuller and smaller than Jessica’s lips.
Jessica and Michelle have been compared many times by fans and netizens. The weirdest fact about them? Through Jessica, Michelle met Director Wong Jing and landed a contract with Rich and Famous Talent Management Group Limited. According to Michelle’s Wikipedia entry, after Jessica was unable to film World’s Finest, she recommended to Wong Jing that Michelle take her role as “Hai Tang.” Wong Jing took notice of Michelle and eventually, he offered her a contract with Rich and Famous Talent Management Group Limited.
Jessica Hsuan and Faye Wong
In addition to looking like Michelle Ye, Jessica Hsuan also bears a reseblance to the forty-year-old golden Hong Kong singer, Faye Wong. Even though they do not really share identical facial features, Jessica used to resemble Faye, especially at the beginning of her career when she still had short straight hair. Their eyes also look quite similar, while they are both tall and close at age. Apart from their physical resemblance, Faye and Jessica were both born in August, have the same bloodtype (O), have the same star sign (Leo) and are both 1.71 cm tall.
Comments : I find Jessica and Michelle a resembled pair better. After seeing them in Golden Faith I really loved their sisterly bond together. Michelle and Jess do resemble each other in my opinon and they really act well together :) But yeah. as for Jessica resembling Faye, Nah I dont think so. but yeah. Hope to see Jess and Michelle act together again in the dramas. Michelle has been very sucessful on her career. She did so well and went to mainland China to act in movies and dramas. As for Jess Still in TVB and I still love her acting from the beggining when she entered the industry but yeah. Support them both.
The second week of (A Pillow Case of Mystery II) broadcast continued to get high ratings, averaging 32 points, peaking at 37 points. Bobby Au Yeung said earlier that he'll "run nude" to celebrate if ratings reach 50 points. Yesterday at the series promotional event, the Producer (Lam Chi Wah) arranged Johnson Lee to be disguised as Mermaid Pauline to predict the 50 point ratings, forcing Bobby to appear 'nude'. Bobby was dressed in a muscle shirt and triangular swim trunks, posing on stage for the audience. He laughed said that being watched like this feels strange. He also requested Jessica Hsuan to accompany him and wear tight clothing to celebrate the high ratings.
Recently Bobby's good friend Michael Tao and a female companion wearing a bikini were photographed at the beach sunbathing. Asked Bobby if he knows that Michael is sweetly in love? He joked and said that he doesn't know, but congratulates him. He also said that Michael and the girl are matching, he really has good taste. Earlier it was rumored that Michael and his ex-wife Ah Bo got back together? He said that both are single again, Bobby hopes that Ah Bo can find her other half soon, or she'll end up spending the rest of her life with a dog.
Jessica happy for Gigi Lai
Asked if Jessica will reveal a 'career line' to celebrate the good ratings or will she accompany Bobby in running nude? She laughed and said that she doesn't have any career line, nor does she have any tight clothing to wear to accompany Bobby with. Does she have to ask her boyfriend first? She expressed that it is not necessary, her boyfriend and Bobby know each other. Bobby will not have any improper thinking towards her. She also said that her boyfriend is Westerner, does not mind having his girlfriend being a little sexy. Asked if her boyfriend has seen the 'leng mo' photo books? She said that her boyfriend has to work around 10 hours each day, when he gets home he just sleeps, so he hasn't gotten the time to look at them. Speaking of Gigi having twin girls, Jessica is very happy for her, she likes daughters too, but twins is too dificult, as a mother that is a huge responsibility. She's feeling quite contradictory now, but her boyfriend hopes to have a child.
Jessica Hsuan Suen is one of the few people in the entertainment circle who sticks to rules and principles. She will stick to her ground as long as she has a reason supporting her. Jessica states, "I won't do something I don't want to for money."
Jessica remembers, "Before, there was only black and white, right and wrong, this is a merit, yet it can also be a disadvantage. Now I can see the gray area in between. As the society and the environment changes, and when everyone is heading towards the same direction, I can not force the world to change for me. There are things in need of negotiating, but the unchanging principle is that: I will not do anything I don't want for money."
Jessica experienced lots of ups and downs in the entertainment circle, thinking back to the past; Jessica admits that she was witless. Jessica recalls, "A lot of dislikes and arguments, even though the person doesn't care, but because of my personality, I just can't hold back. The press used my personality to their advantage and made things much worse than they appear to be. I later discovered the entertainment circle's rules, there is no use in fighting it, and therefore I must find a way to find a balance. As people grow up they start to realize that flaws exist within everyone. There is no need to hate each other just because we have different personalities; there are many different types of friends."
VERBAL ARGUMENTS WITH MAGGIE CHEUNG
Jessica worked with Maggie Cheung Ho Yee on the series "Old Time Buddy" in 1997; this is the year TVB's "Top Fa Dan Everlasting Verbal Arguments" began. Jessica openly blames Maggie for frequently being late; Maggie fought back and reveals that there are constant "No Good" takes because Jessica had been laughing too much. These back and forth arguments lasted for sometime before TVB ordered the two to stop. The war of rivalry continued, the two raced to see who gets to functions first, showing their childish behaviours. Jessica says, "The arguments happened a long time, they are now part of the past and no one will remember it anymore. I felt grievance back then, I did not do anything wrong and yet I was blamed. Ten years later, I would not have handled the situation like that; I would not respond to the press, I will directly ask the person what they said about me.
DON'T MIND WORKING TOGETHER AGAIN
The continuous verbal arguments had been her turning point. Jessica reveals, "I had been pulled into the reality world and could no longer stay in my ideal dream world. I took the first step and started the process of realization. I was a care-free person before, thinking that I'll always remain that way until I was forty. Only when the incident occurred did I realize that no body can escape the process of maturing. I was stressed and didn't know how to handle the situation. TVB had originally planned filming the TV version of The Golden Girls, the girls would portray the two main leads perfectly. Jessica reveals, "TVB asked me if I felt comfortable working with Maggie Cheung again, I said no problem. I liked The Golden Girls and I feel that I can portray the character well." Jessica feels happy just by thinking about the idea.
FATHER-DAUGHTER RELATIONSHIP WITH DAMIAN LAU
Jessica's latest series The Drive of Life is now airing, she reveals that one of the main reasons she accepted her role was because she had the opportunity to work with Damian Lau Chung Yan. Jessica says, "I've watched his performance ever since I was little, he is very charming. He really gave me the "dad" feeling after getting to know him. We talk about filming and we talk about life, especially my personality and ways to handle things. Damian says I remind him of his youth days; we're both strong, stick to our principles and will defend ourselves for the right reason. He gave me useful pointers so I wouldn't be in his footsteps."
Since entering TVB in 1992, Jessica has had various arguments and problems with other female artists; it all seems to be because Jessica wanted to "stick to her principle".
NOT REGRETING GIVING UP ON RONALD WING
There can never seem to be a balance between career and romance. Her past boyfriends include: fellow actor Dicky Cheung Wai Kin, businessman Ronald Wing Man Hon, and orthodontist Kevin Chan Kin Wai. In these past years, Gallen Lo Ka Leung, Louis Koo Tin Lok and Joe Ma Tak Chung all made it on her rumored boyfriend list. "Louis and Joe's rumors were the reporter's "gift" to me, the rumors are hilarious. Of the three relationships, her relationship with Ronald Wing lasted the longest, they dated for six years. Those were Jessica's busiest years. She thinks it was unfair to Ronald because he had dated her in those years.
WANTING MARRIAGE AND A FAMILY
"I promised him (Ronald) to go on vacation with him, then the company called and I decided to work instead. My career was ranked #1, my family #2 and friends come after that. I don't know where to place my boyfriend. I have no regret for my past decisions. If I had wanted to get married I would have already done so, I chose the entertainment circle." The Jessica now wants to obtain a balance. Jessica says, "I want to have marriage and a family."
NOT EASY TO BE #1
Jessica has filmed over thirty series for TVB in the past years. The highest record was having four series airing per year. In 2000, Jessica fell ill when filming A Step into the Past, she had to be hospitalized for eight days and absorb twenty four packs of medical packs. "I worked continuously until I started vomiting and felt very weak. I said to God, I can return all my possessions to him; I didn't want my house, car and money anymore. I only want health. Every since then I learned to slow down my pace and realized that other than work, family and friends only need me." Jessica now has reduced production, signing only per series contract with TVB, releasing one series per year.

Most I loved seeing her in was in Step Into Past, Parental Guidence (singaporean drama) , Just Love I&II, Golden Faith, Good Match from Heaven, Lady Fan, etc. But most renound and most cute dramas was mainly DIF IV (pairing with Louis Koo) Golden Faith (pairing with Gallen Lo) Parental Guidence (pairing with *forgot the name*) & Step Into Past (another pairing with Louis Koo)
Lately I been online searching on youtube and found some clips of Jessica Hsuan. It been a while seeing her act. Recently I seeing her newest drama names : Sister in the Pearl. 1. Ding Cheong On – Wan Siu Lun He works at the Ocean Park as a bird trainer. Being arrogant and traditional, he doesn’t like a woman to be his superior. Thus he is often at loggerheads with Chi Shun. However, he doesn’t realize that their link is a match from heaven. He prefers to be with Si Si. But when Chi Shun is dying, he realizes who he really loves and marries her. Siu Lun does this cheeky role well as he is young then to fit the age.
2. Ding Cheong Sheng – Chiang Dai Wai He is Cheong On’s eldest brother who is a fishmonger. He can be very overbearing at times. He doesn’t know how to treasure his wife and often quarrels with her. Why doesn’t he bring her along for holidays from the day they are married? Because he is very afraid of heights. Cheng On has to overcome his fear but taking him on the cable car in Ocean Park. Have a good laugh at this – on the first trip, he holds on to his brother’s leg tightly under the seat. But after the first try, he demands more trips!
3. Kwong Sheung Wo – Leung Wing Chung He is Cheng On’s colleague who lacks confidence in himself. He tries hard to learn from him and hopes to become a natural like him with animals. He likes Si Si for her talkative nature but both can only be friends.

She changes her mind. Both end up as a couple and they keep quarreling. They head for a breakup. When Si Si accidentally loosens the red rope around her foot in heaven, she turns weak and is about to die of cancer without Cheong On’s love.

Moreover, she also mis-ties Cheong Sheng’s foot with Kei Fong to cause Lai Jing to nearly divorce. Thus she decides to come to earth to settle the mess. She ends up liking Cheong On after working at the Ocean Park as a trainer. This makes her the third party into their relationship and she feels very remorseful. After making both couples reconcile, she returns to heaven.
8. Lam Lai Jing – Sheung Tin Ngor She helps her husband at the fish stall and never asks anything in return. He takes her for granted and she goes for another man as she lands Cheong Sheng with a broken foot to be put on cast after pushing him down the stairs accidentally. Soon, she discovers that he is most suitable for him and returns to him.
9. Fung Kei Fong – Chan Mei Kei She is from China and comes into Cheong Sheng’s marriage. Sigh – why is she kept stereotyping as a mainland woman?
10. Tang Miu Chu – Mui Siu Wai She is Chi Shun’s colleague who often bullies Cheong On. She becomes Sheung Wo’s girlfriend later.
My Comments : I love watching this series cauze shows how two people who barely knew each other know what love really means and this series mainly talks about faith. So yeah. I really love Hsuan Huan character here. So cute and comical. But yeah. I always think Kwok Oi Ming character cauze she doesnt believe in Love nor fate, Until Jessica brings them both together by tying a rope of love on them which unfortuately brings her and Chi On together. So far this series I give it a 9/10 cauze the themesong obviously really didnt sound good and the singer kinda sucked. But overall I loved Jessica Character more.
